The Boiler has packed up what should I do?

You wake up at 7.30 am, which is a little late if you want to get to work on time. You head to the bathroom and turn on the shower, and then you stand there waiting for the hot water to run through. It's taking an age, and your time’s still ticking, so you end up having a cold shower. After dressing you grab some Weetabix, but the hot kitchen tap is stone cold when you go to wash your bowl - then you notice that you can see your own breath!Has this ever happened to you?

It's effectively what happens when your boiler packs up. Basic amenities like hot water, which you've always taken for granted, suddenly stop working. You can't take a shower, you can't wash up and the heating doesn't work. If this happens in the winter then you probably won't be filled with joy when you return home from a day's work. The concept of getting a new boiler probably won't fill you with joy. For starters, you'll have to pay quite a substantial amount of money to get a new one, and then you have to have it installed.

Despite this, saying goodbye to your old boiler will probably be a blessing in disguise. Boilers normally clap out after about fifteen years, and if they dont then they're running quite inefficiently. Boilers at this age have an average efficiency of only 65%, which is well short of new boilers from British Gas, which typically operate at 90%.  Now with you've come to terms with the fact you'll have to pay out for a new boiler, you'll have to decide on which one to get. There are many different types of boiler that you can install in the home, but the most popular, least expensive and most widely available are conventional, condensing and combination boilers.Conventional Boilers -

If you have a gravity heating system then you'll more than likely require a conventional boiler. These use a system which heats up a store of water before you use it.Condensing Boilers - These are more expensive than conventional boilers, but they are also highly efficient. During the combustion process they use an extra heat exchanger to extract further heat from the water vapour. It means very little heat is wasted and over the long term you will probably get more for your money. Combi Boilers, Combi boilers are most suitable for a flat or small house because they don’t need to store water, rather they heat the water as you use it. A combination boiler produces an instant supply of on water on tap, while there is no pipe work, tank or cylinder. You can purchase a boiler from many different suppliers, but not all of them can offer cover for your boiler once it is installed. Take a look at energy suppliers like British Gas for extra homecare services that will give you piece of mind once you have a new boiler installed.

THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE SECURING OTHER DEBTS AGAINST YOUR HOME.

YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPAYMENTS ON A MORTGAGE OR ANY OTHER DEBT SECURED ON IT.

There may be a fee for broker advice, the precise amount of the fee will depend upon your circumstances. If a fee is charged it will be 2% of the loan amount payable on completion of the mortgage, subject to minimum £595. For example a £100,000 advance X 2% = £2000.
